   The Earthquake

'I was petrified as the house shook and strange rumblings could be heard…..furniture was sliding around the lounge………things falling from shelves and smashing on the floor….hurrying down the stairs was like being on a ship in a rough sea…Out in the streets we could hear people screeming as they rushed about in panic.....It was so severe that it measured 7.6 on the Richter scale and lasted for about eight minutes.'

 The Bengal famine

'The sight of the poor emaciated starving children crying beside their mothers was heartrending. The most horrendous sight of all was the vultures circling overhead and fighting over the corpses decomposing in the great heat. That terrible memory still grieves me because I was powerless to help them'.
